My mum’s practice focussed on exploring her heritage and creating visual interpretations of simultaneously belonging to and moving between three very different cultures of Fijian, Finnish and English. From this diasporic perspective, she created imaginative, tangible objects exploring the notion of “home”.
Since my mum’s death, I have been interested in exploring the notion of “home” from a diasporic perspective between the ‘here’ and ‘there’ of life and death. I am interested in thinking about timelessness when thinking about my connection to both my mum and what ‘mother’ represents, and I am curious about the idea of my mum representing to me what exists beyond her.
I have taken 4 of my mum's drawings and created this animated dance with them. “In Rhythm Together” is a first attempt at furthering my mum’s work. The piece explores the shift from my mum having been something tangible that depicted home for me - home being a felt sense - to thinking about the idea of my mum, and the sense of home I felt with her, existing beyond her physicality.
Striving to connect the past with the present, I am curious about the connection with my mum that can be found within the act of making, dancing and being. “In Rhythm Together” celebrates the seeds that have been planted and encourages tending to the love that continues to be and grow here.
